The Solitary Arts are Over

When Juilliard professor of piano studies, David Dubal, declared that "the solitary arts are over", it came as no surprise. We have all seen images of the artist alone in their home, working on a painting or music score; ready to debut it to the world. Today the image might be a person at a home office monitoring their twitter, facebook, myspace, and other social networks; hoping for enough hits to get ink in an online newspapers arts section.

If professor Dubal is correct that this hallowed state of development and creation is over due to our modern chaotic world, then it should be considered what we have lost in the process.

Will there ever be a Mozart, Ellington, or Shakespeare again? Professor Dubal feels the dye has been cast and there is no way out. No amount of marketing hype to prop up the next Lang Lang will be able to fool the public that we have lost great talent in our over driven age of 'progress'.
